While consideration of "hard" security measures are important, it is a focus on the essential needs of children that creates a safe and welcoming environment. Regardless of their age, the outcomes for children are much better when they feel they are known, when they feel as though they are part of the school community, and when discipline revolves around teaching them to make healthier choices in all aspects of their lives.
