In addition to serving in elected office as Mayor and in management in the pharmaceutical/medical device industry, NJ School Boards Association Education Specialist and former Director of Training & Professional Development, Vincent R. De Lucia has more than thirty-four years of experience in education before joining NJSBA.
Earning Masters Degrees in Instruction as well as Administration and Supervision, in 1994 Mr. De Lucia was among the first seventy-nine teachers in the USA to achieve National Board Certification (English/Language Arts: Early Adolescence).
After 20 plus years of dedicated service in South Brunswick as a teacher and administrator where he co-authored the award-winning application that designated Crossroads Middle School as a US Department of Education “Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, Mr. De Lucia accepted the opportunity to reform North Brunswick’s Linwood Middle School as its Principal which, under his leadership, was transformed to a true middle school. Through collaboration and professional learning, Mr. De Lucia facilitated the development of Professional Learning Communities and a focus on data driven instruction and decision making.
In 2002, Mr. De Lucia was awarded a Geraldine A. Dodge Foundation grant: “Creating an Invitational School Climate to build school allegiance and academic achievement-Professional Learning Communities.” Vincent has served in several leadership positions including the South Brunswick Assistant to the Superintendent as well as their Public Information Officer and Supervisor of Alternative Programs as well as the North Brunswick Director of Curriculum and the Director of Professional Development & Communications.
North Brunswick, at the time, was a community in transition with a poverty rate approaching 45% and rapid diversification. Collaborative efforts and structures that included all stakeholders resulted, as indicated by a variety of assessments including standardized tests, North Brunswick students from all NCLB sub-groups, are achieving and succeeding.
As an educational consultant he has provided professional development on topics to an array of urban and suburban audiences including teachers, administrators, Board of Education trustees, and parents from across New Jersey as well as leaders and teachers from schools identified as failing. His presentation topics include Professional Learning Communities, turning around failing schools, DEI, Inherent Bias-the Story of My Family & Yours, comprehensive teacher evaluations, research-based instructional strategies, healthy organizational climates, student management, developing Freshman Academies, building effective collaborative teams plus the Common Core State Standards and the long-term benefits of pre-kindergarten. He has also been a key contributor to the NJ DOE’s Office of Governance & Leadership where he was a member of the advisory committee and a lead presenter.
In his work as the Education Specialist for NJSBA, Mr. DeLucia has facilitated research-based task force reports including those that addressed Firearms Safety in Schools & Communities, Health & Wellness, Student Achievement, Mental Health in Schools, Non-College Bound/Career Focused Learners, and Pandemic: Addressing SEL & Learning Gaps. Additionally, he facilitates the NJSBA Equity Council and is a resource to boards of education, superintendents, and the education community.
Current professional learning that he facilitates includes Inherent Bias, Bias & Prejudice, Leadership in Turbulent Times, Why SEL? and Addressing Inherent Bias & Microaggressions in the Workplace.
Mr. DeLucia served on Governor Murphy’s Dual Enrollment Commission and currently serves on the Education Subcommittee of the NJ Juvenile Justice Commission, and the Steering Committees for the Amistad Commission’s Education Committee, SEL4NJ, Arts Ed NJ, and the NJ Public School Labor Management Collaborative.
As the Mayor of South Brunswick his accomplishments included addressing the emotional health of children, increasing industrial ratables, preserving farms, developing, and implementing a funding mechanism for Open Space preservation, and integrity in local government. His initiation of an FBI investigation led to the conviction and incarceration of an aide to the NJ State Senator in 1997 for attempting to bribe him to rezone property.
Mr. De Lucia has four children, Greg, a writer for a national satellite radio show, his wife Alyson, a Director of Production for the History Channel, Detective Rick, his wife Christina, a school nurse (who are the proud parents of Domenick and Giavanna). His stepson Phillip is a welder while Jennifer, his stepdaughter, works in the healthcare industry.
Mr. De Lucia and his wife Joan live in Toms River where they continue to be active in their community, volunteering at the RWJ/Barnabas Field of Dreams the only active recreation facility in New Jersey for those of all abilities and ages.
